GDPR

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which comes into force on 25 May 2018, aims to create common data protection rules within the European Union. The regulation applies to controllers and processors of personal data of natural persons from EU countries.

A number of principles are based on current EU data protection rules. But the General Data Protection Regulation has a wider scope, has stricter standards and includes heavy fines. For example, it requires above-standard consent for the use of some types of data and expands individuals’ rights to data portability and access. It also introduces more effective means of enforcement, which allow the supervisory authority to demand fines of up to four percent of annual sales from companies for certain violations.
